It's been a quiet weekend -- Bob's out of town on a fishing trip (yes, in January!) -- but I
got a lot done. It's his friend Phil's birthday, and they've gone down to Phil's place at
the lake at this time of year for a couple of years now, I guess. He dresses for it, and he
says he stays warm, but it's hard to imagine it being really comfortable.
The cats and I stay here, in front of the little heater at my desk, and under the electric
blanket in bed, and are grateful that we don't have to be out on the lake in the
winter.
My weekends are pretty much always the same. I go to the bank and the post office, I go to
the grocery store and the library. This weekend I also went to the yarn store (but only
to exchange something -- I successfully accomplished not spending any money) and the
bookstore (I bought a knitting book that I'd been wanting, but I had a 25% off coupon). On
Saturday I went to Target and the grocery store, then went back to both of them on Sunday
because I'd forgotten several things.
Friday night I got Chinese food at the grocery store, Saturday night I picked up a chicken
bol at Chipotlé, and tonight I cooked at home and had a piece of fish with macaroni
and cheese. Okay, it was a Stouffer's dinner, but at least I cooked it! Actually, I
cooked three times today. I had scrambled eggs with cheese and salsa for breakfast,
a frozen mini pizza for lunch, and the fish for dinner.
I did buy a lot of things for lunches next week. Last week I enjoyed having a lot of little
things to eat for my lunch, so I'm doing that again this week. I'll have yogurt and a
banana for breakfast with my tea, then for lunch I'll have cottage cheese, celery, hummus,
jalapeña-artichoke dip (from the grocery store deli case), and
some veggie chips--like potato chips, but made from carrots, spinach as well as potatoes.
Lighter, not as greasy as potato chips. And probably some almonds and cheese for a snack
in the late afternoon so I don't raid the snack box.
While I was at Target today, my phone rang. I assumed it would be Bob, but the caller
i.d. display said "Dave." At first I thought it was my brother-in-law--my sister had
some surgery this week and he called earlier in the week--but then I realized it was Dave
from work. I answered, but there wasn't anyone on the other end, just some ambient noise.
I said "hello" a couple of times, but when I didn't get any answer, I hung up and figured
he'd turned the phone on accidentally and somehow called me.
But then, having read WAY too many mystery novels, I thought maybe he's in trouble! Maybe
he had had an accident or something, and was trying to get help, and either called me
on purpose (unlikely) or just pushed a button at random. Anyway, I thought I'd better
check, so I called him back.
He answered, and I said, "It's Willa. What are you doing?" He said, "I'm walking Simon,
what are you doing?" I told him what had happened, and said that I just thought
I'd better check and be sure that he didn't need rescuing or anything, and he thanked me
for checking, but said that he must have accidentally turned the phone on when he
put it in his pocket, and he was fine.
Doesn't hurt to check.
